Photography Competition 2008

Co-curricular Education Department welcome ALL students to join the competition.

In conjunction with the auspicious event, The Brunei Times is also organising a photographic competition for all
Bruneians and those residing or visiting Brunei Darussalam — including the invited photojournalists — based on the four themes. Each photographer can submit up to six (6) digital images on each theme.

Three top prizes will be awarded for EACH theme:

  • 1st Prize US$1500
  • 2nd Prize US$1000
  • 3rd Prize US$500.

The Best Photography Award will go to the overall best entry to be chosen from the four 1st Prize winners. In addition, there will be a Special Award for the best entry submitted by students of secondary schools and tertiary institutions.

Selected images from the competition will be featured in a commemorative book for this auspicious event. The book will be presented as a gift to His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam. The book will be rich in visual images and will convey the bond between His Majesty and his loyal subjects.

Rules & Regulations

  1. The Competition is open to all Bruneians and those residing or visiting Brunei Darussalam. Management and staff of Brunei Times Sdn Bhd and the Department of Information (the joint organiser) are not allowed to participate in the Competition.
  2. Entries submitted for the Competition must cover the various aspects of Brunei Darussalam based on the following four themes:
    • Celebrations – His Majesty's 62nd Birthday Celebrations.
    • Our People
    • Our Cultural Heritage
    • Our respect for the Environment.
  3. Each participant can submit up to 6 photos for each theme, i.e. maximum 24 photos for 4 themes.
  4. All photos must be in DIGITAL format, either in colour or black-and-white. Slides or prints will not be accepted.
  5. Prizes will be awarded to the three best entries for each theme:
    • 1st Prize : US$1,500
    • 2nd Prize : US$1,000
    • 3rd Prize : US$ 500

    The Overall Best Photography Award will be chosen from the 1st Prize winner for EACH of the theme.

    There will also be a Special Award for the Overall Best Student Entry which will be chosen from the entries submitted by students from the secondary schools and tertiary institutions.

  6. Each participant can only be awarded one prize for each of the themes.
  7. The Organisers reserve the right to disqualify any entries that have been published, or used for any commercial purpose before. The Organisers also reserve the right to disqualify any prize winners who do not own the sole copyright to their entries, and to recover the prizes that have been awarded to them.
  8. The Organisers will not be responsible for lost or damaged entries.
  9. All entries submitted shall become the property of the Organisers, but the photographers will still own the right to use their photos after one year following the announcement of the results of the Competition.
  10. The Organisers have the right to edit any of the entries submitted and use them for the Commemorative Book without any payment of fees. The Commemorative Book will be presented to His Majesty as a gift from the photographers to mark his 62nd Birthday Celebrations.
  11. The Organisers also have the right to exhibit any of the entries or use them for any publicity purposes relating to the Commemorative Book.
  12. All photographs should be submitted in JPEG format with minimal compression, at least 3000 pixels on the longer side. Name, IC/Passport No., Address, Telephone No., Email Address, Title of Entry and Location where picture was taken should be included in the Official Form which can be downloaded from the Organisers’ website: www.bt.com.bn/photojournalist
  13. Composite photographs, multiple exposures, and images manipulated electronically which distort the reality of the image or otherwise may be disqualified.
  14. The Organisers reserve the right to reject any entries if the origin of the source is in dispute.
  15. The judges’ decision is final and no correspondence pertaining to the decision of the results will be entertained.
  16. Submission deadline is 25 July 2008. Only winners will be notified.
  17. Submission of entry/entries signifies acceptance of the rules and conditions stated above.
